Parklets: Adding beauty to urban spaces
Parklets are defined as an extension of a sidewalk, and they provide streets with amenities like seats, tables, bike racks and unique landscaping, all while bringing beauty to urban spaces.

More and more parklets are popping up alongside sidewalks in small to major cities in North America. Parklets are defined as an extension of a sidewalk, and they provide streets with amenities like seats, tables, bike racks and unique landscaping, all while bringing beauty to urban spaces. The first parklet was constructed in San Francisco, and The City by the Bay currently has more parklets on its sidewalks than any other city in the United States.

What is a parklet?

Parklets are commonly seen in areas where urban parks are not as prevalent, or where the existing sidewalk isn’t wide enough to accommodate day-to-day activities. Parklets are designed as both permanent or temporary structures, and they usually replace a small number of curbside parking places. The newly constructed areas are intended to encourage people to stop, sit, rest and enjoy a beautiful landscape or piece of art.

The first parklet was erected in 2005 by Rebar, an art and design studio in San Francisco. The typical design features a platform extension that widens the curb and acts as a foundation for seats, tables and chairs. Some parklets are permanent while others are temporary; the temporary types are largely in cities with snow-removal needs during the winter.

In addition to bringing beauty to urban spaces, parklets also benefit local businesses, residents and visitors by attracting customers and initiating community conversations. A number of major cities throughout North America have started building parklets. Some of these include:

  • Phoenix
  • Philadelphia
  • New York City
  • Chicago
  • Dallas
  • Los Angeles
  • Seattle
  • Vancouver
