Maintaining a fresh and functional space at the office allows for employees to be more productive, and more creative. A compelling design can create a comfortable environment that also promotes employee connections and collaborations.

While that theory is typically applied to indoor spaces, thinking outside the box sometimes means thinking outside the office walls. Taking office spaces outdoors has become a growing trend in workplace design.

While permanent outdoor workspaces may not be feasible due to weather patterns, getting out in the fresh air from time to time can help boost creativity and productivity.

There are different levels of outdoor spaces. There is the indoor/outdoor hybrid that allows companies to simply open ceiling-to-floor windows, bringing the outdoors in, and then there are entirely outdoor locations. These can be simple patios or cabana-like huts. Simply being closer to nature can help attentiveness in some employees, and the mobile nature of an outdoor space would mean employees could move freely indoors or outdoors, as they are compelled to do so.

If your business decides to invest in an outdoor space for employees, it is important to consider where you will place it, what weather-resistant materials (such as recycled plastic) you will use, and how employees will access it.

It is better to give employees the option to move back and forth between the indoors and outdoors, as opposed to limiting them to one or the other. This will allow each individual to work the way that he or she works best.
